چکیده

Objective Bending radiographs are routinely used to determine curve flexibility during planning of scoliosis surgery. However, the cumulative dose of ionizing radiation is a concern, especially in growing children. Ultrasound (US) imaging method has been used to measure the coronal curvatures up to 45° Cobb. The objectives were to investigate the feasibility of using US method to scan AIS surgical candidates, to measure the curve flexibility and to determine its correspondence with the radiographic measures.

Predictors of curve flexibility in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a retrospective study of 100 patients.

Curve flexibility in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) was one of the major concerns of spinal surgeons since the evolution of surgical correction techniques. In this respect, many tried to identify which criteria denote more rigid curve. In the present study, we aimed toward determining important factors influencing AIS curve flexibility on supine bending films. We assessed radiographs of ...

Magnetic resonance imaging investigations of position of conus medullaris in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis as a peripheral neuropathy.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a structural 3-dimensional deformity the spine, which is occurring between 10 years of age and skeletal maturity and it mostly affects prepuberbal girls. The etiology of AIS remains unknown and seems should be multifactorial. According to the theories, there could be a shorter spinal cord or a higher location of the conus medullaris and disproportionate ...

An effective assessment method of spinal flexibility to predict the initial in-orthosis correction on the patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)

BACKGROUND Spinal flexibility is an essential parameter for clinical decision making on the patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Various methods are proposed to assess spinal flexibility, but which assessment method is more effective to predict the effect of orthotic treatment is unclear. OBJECTIVE To investigate an effective assessment method of spinal flexibility to predict ...

The Efficacy of Proximal Lumbar Curve Flexibility in Patients with Main Thoracic Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Treated by Selective Thoracic Fusion Surgery

STUDY DESIGN Retrospective radiographic study. PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy of the proximal lumbar curve flexibility compared with the traditional whole lumbar curve flexibility in patients with main thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (MT-AIS). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Traditionally the flexibility of the whole lumbar curve was measured, and the flexibility of the proximal lumbar cu...

Generalized Ligamentous Laxity; a Parameter Should not to be Forgotten in Preoperative Planning of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

BACKGROUND Many factors effect on management (surgical and nonsurgical) of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was evaluation of the effects of generalized ligamentous laxity (GLL) on surgical treatment of AIS. MATERIALS AND METHODS 72 patients with AIS were studied between 2002 and 2009. 24 cases (33.4%) were placed in group A (normal) while 48 patie...
